On a once-forgotten patch of land next to Grace Community Church in Lincoln, Nebraska, rows of tomatoes, lettuce, herbs and peppers now flourish—thanks to the vision of Pastor Maria Chavez and a handful of committed volunteers.
In early April 2025, Grace Community transformed its empty side lot into an organic urban micro‑farm, with a goal: provide fresh, healthy produce to families facing food insecurity. Every Saturday, congregation members and neighborhood volunteers gather to plant, weed, and harvest. The produce is split between a local pantry and direct “market” stands where qualified neighbors shop at pay‑what‑they-can prices.
“We weren’t called to build buildings only,” says Pastor Maria. “We were called to nourish souls—and bodies.”
Impact to Date (6 weeks running):
Grace Community also hosts monthly workshops on composting, seed saving, and cooking demonstrations—equipping participants with skills to grow and prepare their own food long-term.
This micro‑farm is more than a garden; it’s a living classroom and a testament to what faith, soil, and community spirit can yield.
